IT STARTS WITH YOU

Independent craft isn’t a trend - it's a community. A narrative of local stories that survive on one thing: the people who choose it. When you drink local booze, you back the local farmers and makers who it make it all possible.

WHY IT MATTERS

On this Small Business Saturday and everyday, some words to drink by:

For one, there are very few truly local products. Your farmer’s market blueberries might be grown in Mexico. Your Brooklyn-brewed beer might be coming from Utica. And local whiskey? It takes a fair amount of probing to find out that very little whiskey comes from the distilleries promoted on the label. Craft distilling is still in its adolescence and most of our peers are content to take the shortcut and buy from one of the big guys and hope you won’t ask the hard questions.

Maybe you don’t mind a little sleight of hand. All that matters is quality, you might say. After all, whiskey isn’t perishable like produce.

And local to New York is adjacent to a lot of the world in human geography. It is a place of great cultural exchange, so why would local matter? “Local” has become a shorthand for small and independent because of what it is not: available on every shelf in every store. Local is idiosyncratic. Local is unencumbered by corporate mandates. Local is individualistic and unconstrained. Local is maverick and ambitious. And we mean all of those things when we say Drink Local Booze.

It’s a suggestion, and a provocation.
